Your Professional Photography Checklist

by Luminary Vision | Sep 23, 2025 | Photography & Videography | 0 comments

Your Professional Photography Checklist
Professional photography incorporates many elements, and of course, the techniques used will vary depending on the industry and what you are working with. Whether you are shooting corporate events, jewellery, clothing, gadgets, food or weddings, it is handy to have a pro photography checklist. We have compiled our very own!

Client Brief

The first step is to ensure you understand exactly what/who you are photographing and where. Knowing what the client wants from the shoot is essential before you even consider your techniques and equipment. You must be on the same page as the client regarding the style and aim of the shoot.

Location, Location

If it is possible to visit the location before the shoot, that would be incredibly helpful. You can determine the lighting, angles, atmosphere, and post-production positioning. You could even have a video call with the client to assess the space if an in-person visit is not doable.

Equipment

Ensure that all equipment you plan to use is fully charged, that all memory storage is clear and correctly formatted, and that everything you may need for the shoot is packed. Even things you may not need could come in handy, so be sure to bring accessories that could help. Clean all camera lenses and sensors before you pack your equipment.

Lighting

Lighting can make or break a photoshoot, making it essential to any photographic checklist. Flashes or strobes with charged batteries, light modifiers (softboxes, umbrellas, reflectors), light stands, tripods, backup triggers, and colour calibration tools are essential.

Logistics

It’s always wise to check the weather due to the uncertainty of the day, as you may need a backup plan if, for example, your shoot is for an outdoor event but it rains. Or the lighting is not suitable on the day. Your clothing shouldn’t restrict you, and be sure to plan your route with the aim of arriving early in case of any holdups. Water and snacks are always a great idea, too.

Final Thoughts

Following a quick checklist before a professional photography project can make the difference between a well-organised and successful day and a chaotic project. Sorting all equipment and planning logistics beforehand, as well as fully understanding the brief, will leave you free to focus on the craft fully, and your creative flair will flow. You will get excellent results, which means happy customers.
