Social media content should be material that engages your audience instantly. Creating captivating, informative and shareable content that tells your brand’s narrative. Content for social media can feel constant and overwhelming. You post, plan, think ahead… and then do it all again the next week. Over time, it becomes less about creativity and more about consistency – and that’s where many businesses start to feel stuck.
The reality is, strong social media content no longer comes from doing more. It comes from doing the right things consistently. Everyone knows that social media trends and algorithms change – literally overnight. The one thing you can control is what content you want seen, and that starts with having the right kind of visual content.
These days, social media content comes in a huge variety of forms. Single images, carousels, videos, short and long form – just to mention a few.
Let’s take a closer look.
Photography
Why social media photography matters
A photograph is the quickest way to grab your audience’s attention. It’ll either engage them or allow them to scroll by without a second thought. People make these decisions quickly and unconsciously on whether something has their attention. That first impression matters.
You need images that draw your customers in so that they want to take a closer look, read captions and click on links. Your images need to be professional, but natural. Good photography is often overlooked on social media with a “that’ll do” attitude towards it (often when people focus on the quantity of content and not the quality), and that fatigue and tiredness in posting can show. Investing in good quality photography is the first impression and the difference between you gaining the attention of a potential customer, or someone else getting it.
Good quality professional photography sends a clear message to people – that you care and you take pride in your business. In turn, people engage more in this type of content and are more likely to share and save it.
Videography
When we look at platforms like Instagram, which launched in 2010, it began as a simple photo-only platform. It focused purely on image sharing, with square formats and built-in filters, shaping a very distinct visual style.
Since then, it’s evolved significantly and this is where videography starts to massively take over.
In 2013 the platform expanded into video, allowing people to share 15-second clips with filters. Widescreen video was introduced in 2015 allowing different aspect ratios to give creators more flexibility. Shortly after in 2016 we had access to longer videos which increased to one minute, opening up more storytelling potential, and later that same year, we were given stories: temporary, in-the-moment content became a core part of the platform.
Reels were introduced in 2020 as short-form video became a major focus on content which hugely altered how content was being created and consumed.
What started as a simple photo-sharing app is now a multi-format platform, where photography, video and short-form content all play a role in how brands appear and connect with their audience.
Reels grab the attention of all generations and with the rise of influencers this means the demand for consistent, high-quality, stand -out content is only growing and will continue to grow.
So how can you use social media content and what are people interested in?
Behind the Scenes
Behind the scenes content usually works really well. Show what people don’t usually see, content that isn’t polished or perfect, but is very real (excuse the pun!). However, it is important to note that how you show up for your behind the scenes content, still needs to be done well and reflect the standard of your business.
This could be your workspace, your process or how your product or service comes together. It builds trust and makes your brand feel more human. It is also a great way to show the ‘before and after’ of something. How it started and how it finished up – content that people also enjoy seeing.
Team & Personality
People connect with people. So show potential customers the people behind the brand or team.
Photograph or film your team in a natural, relaxed way. These don’t need to feel overly staged – just real, approachable and reflective of your business.
Products in Context
Don’t just show what you offer – show how it’s used. Lifestyle-style and 360 photography helps your audience picture themselves using your product or working with you. Videos provide transparency and clear visuals on what you are showing. All these build up a relationship with your audience.
Educational Content
Share what you know. Podcasting is a great way to share your knowledge in a relaxed, conversational manner. It opens up discussions and questions you may not have thought your customers might want to know about. You become more approachable when people can see and hear you.
Consistent Brand Imagery
Consistency builds recognition. Using a cohesive social media content across your website and social platforms helps your brand feel more established, recognisable and professional.
Creating content that lasts
Good content shouldn’t be used once and forgotten. You want timeless content that can be reused. With the right approach, one session whether its photography, videography or Podcasting, it will give you weeks of social media content including:
- Images for your website
- Visuals for marketing materials
- Content for future campaigns
All in formats and forms suitable for:
- Stories
- Posts
- Reels

These will all cover a multitude of platforms from Linked In, Facebook, Instagram to YouTube and many more. It’s about creating with intention, so everything works together and getting seen in as many places as you can.
