Podcasts are an easy way to stay informed, find inspiration and explore new topics, but be warned: they also have the potential to leave you laughing out loud in public!
Whether you’re relaxing at home, out on a run or walking the dog, a podcast can be the perfect companion. They bring storytelling to life and draw you into conversations you might rarely find anywhere else. Businesses and individuals use them to share insightful perspectives and cement their authority within their industry, while community groups can use podcasts to extend their reach and boost audience engagement.
With the 2026 “Belper 250” community celebrations in full swing, it was quite a coup for us when Jedediah Strutt, a central figure of the Industrial Revolution, dropped in at the Luminary Podcast Studio here in Belper. It was almost certainly his very first podcast (bearing in mind he turned 300 this year).
The topics varied wildly, taking in the banned Well Dressings (too much fighting between competitors), Strutty Bangers and something about gooseberries. We also covered Belper’s rich social history, and discovered that you can adjust the position of the North Mill simply by using a mallet.
Our very own Kiley and Rachel were joined by Richard Terry (Belper 250 Marketing and Communications) and Adrian Farmer (World Heritage Site Coordinator) to take a deep dive into these historical quirks and facts. We found it fascinating to learn about the transformational impact Jedediah had in putting Belper firmly on the map at the start of the Industrial Revolution, and how his foundations helped shape Belper into the thriving town it is today.
